Faith, Grief, and the Perfect Blowout: 5 Things Theresa Caputo Taught Me When We Met

Faith, Grief, and the Perfect Blowout: 5 Things Theresa Caputo Taught Me When We Met

I’m finishing the last cluster of extra fluffy, curled lashes in my vanity, prepping for one of the most exciting meetings of my life… THERESA CAPUTO. On a Thursday morning. Casual.

I was excited for multiple reasons, one being that, holy sh#$, it’s Theresa Caputo. I grew up watching her show, and having half my family be Italian from Long Island, she always felt like home—like a relative you’d see at Christmas who’d grab your face, scoop an extra helping on your plate even though you’re filled to the brim, then slide you a twenty. But, ya know, with the ability to bridge heaven and earth in any given moment.

I’ve never been around a medium (that I knew of) and I was practically ascending myself from the excitement and curiosity.

I sit down in my big green chair and rip open my laptop out of excitement. I zoom to get on Zoom. When Theresa joined the call, fresh tan and sparkly-eyed, it immediately sparked something in me—she’s the real deal, just in general. And since that first call, we got to hang—me being the copywriter allowed me to ask all kinds of burning questions, some of which I now realize she’s a saint for entertaining.

Here’s what I learned:

1) How to ACTUALLY be divinely guided, and what it looks like in practice.

Yeah, saying it sounds nice, but what does this really mean? There are times I think I see a sign. It kinda-sorta feels that way, but within three seconds, I’ve convinced myself I’m just reaching. So, I asked Theresa about signs—are they universal? Are they always the same?

Her response: Yes… and no.

She told me this story:

“...So, it just happened again upstairs. We were talking about family, and I glanced over, and there was a big fat fly on the window. Has anyone here—there’s about twenty of us—seen a fly today? It’s December. There shouldn’t be flies.

But that’s the point. When my nanny passed in 1983, a big fat fly showed up. And every single milestone since then, there’s always been a big fat fly. Not a cute little one. The big, hairy kind.

Side note: If I ever see people wearing big hairy fly necklaces in tribute, just know I was there when it all started.

But that’s the thing—Theresa says we’re always looking for the obvious signs when, in reality, they’re already happening, we just have to be open, no matter the package it comes in. Hairy flies and all. And while yes, like in any way of communicating, there are signs that are universal in meaning, but there are others that mean something to you

Theresa encourages people to find their own signs. Not the ones you expect, but the ones that just… happen.

“Even through this jewelry line, Divinely Guided, hopefully, that will help people feel more connected—to themselves, to their intuition, and to their loved ones.”

The pieces were designed to help you keep this (and so much more) top of mind…and heart. And maybe that’s what being divinely guided actually looks like—not chasing the sign, but noticing it when it’s already there.

2) This is real…and Spirit does NOT care about a schedule

Our videographer Katie’s family came through and short-circuited the sound..and her face. Then Janelle’s sister. Then Vicka’s grandparents. And then we had an espresso martini and sang karaoke because damn. But I’ll tell you what… the amount of love in that room was palpable, and I can confirm that spirit does not, in fact, answer to a shot list schedule apparently.

3) How to keep your faith and trust signs… even (especially) when life is hard.

Sure, when life is groovy and the birds come and put your robe on you in the morning à la Snow White or whatever, it’s easy to have faith. But what about when life knocks you on your ass? What about the moments when you lose something so precious to you that it makes you doubt everything? And not just a loved one, but a job, or a relationship, or a belief about yourself or others? How can you trust that something has your back after that?

The thing I love about Theresa’s line (and approach to life in general) is that she acknowledges grief in all of its forms and doesn’t try to “silver lining” it—or hand out a generic one-liner like “time heals all wounds.” She’s real with it.

“Grief isn’t just losing a loved one. We grieve things in everyday life. A version of ourselves, a relationship, a dream we had. But this jewelry is a reminder—of connection, of healing, of strength. To constantly remind yourself: Never give up.”

She talks about the way spirit moves through her, how this jewelry line feels like an extension of that—how it carries something that can physically remind people of what they need to hold onto.

“I can’t describe it. If you’ve ever been to one of my live shows, or watched my TV show, or listened to my podcast—you feel the healing. You see it happening. Imagine that in a piece of jewelry. You feel the power. You feel the grounding. You feel the strength.”

And this isn’t just a concept to her—it’s instinct.

“When I meet someone and I know they need it, I take off a piece of jewelry and just give it to them. And I watch them. They can feel it. They can feel the power of healing through the jewelry.”

It’s easy to dismiss little moments as coincidences, or to doubt what’s meant for you when life is at its hardest. But sometimes, the reminders show up anyway. In a sign. In a moment. In a stranger noticing something about you.

And maybe the point isn’t trying to understand it. Maybe it’s just feeling it when it happens.

4) How she gets her hair so high (and keeps it that way).

I mean, the evidence is anecdotal, but Theresa does kinda validate the Long Island creed:

“The bigger the hair, the closer to God.”

So, OF COURSE, I asked how the hell she does that, because despite my efforts—and enough product to require maintaining a 15-foot distance from any open flame—I still end up looking like the guy from Titanic who said, “I have a child!” anytime I try to style them.

The answer is simple and exactly what you’d think –literally hairspray. And lots of it. Well, and Jodi, the Queen of Volume, from Theresa’s team who was wielding said hairspray like the secret weapon that it is.

My biggest take away: spirit moves whether or not you’re looking for it. Whether or not you feel ”enough.” Whether or not you think you’re the kind of person who gets messages from the other side.

Signs don’t wait until you’re ready, or until you’ve got it all figured out, or until you’ve decided you even believe in them. They just show up. And not always how you expect.

Sometimes they’re poetic—an undeniable, perfectly timed message that lands like a cosmic wink. And sometimes, it’s just not what you expect: a big, hairy fly in December. Or a medium with a damn good sense of humor, perfect blowout, and bedazzled jeans. Or a camera short-circuiting during a big work day. Or a necklace that finds its way to you at the exact right time.

Maybe the only thing that’s ever been required of us is to notice. To trust that connection isn’t something we have to chase, but something that’s already there, waiting for us to wake up to it.
